Privacy Policy

This policy describes how New Jersey Criminal History handles information connected with a visit, including data supplied by a user and technical data collected automatically. It also explains why that information may be used, the limited circumstances in which it may be shared, and the choices available to visitors. By continuing to use the website, you acknowledge the practices stated in this policy.

Data You Give Us Directly

Search Queries

A name or location entered in a search tool is sent directly to the third-party company that operates that tool. The provider processes the request and supplies its results. New Jersey Criminal History does not retain or log those search terms on its own systems.

Messages and Contact Submissions

An email or other direct message may be retained so our team can answer it. We do not disclose the message outside the organization unless disclosure is required by law.

Data We Gather Automatically

When a page loads, the website may automatically receive basic technical and usage details:

  • Pages viewed, time spent on them, and view timestamps
  • The referring website, when available
  • Device type and operating system
  • Browser name and version
  • The IP address assigned to the device

Cookies and Analytics

Cookies are small files placed on a device. They and related analytics services help show, in aggregate, how visitors move through the website, which pages receive traffic, and where visits end. Browser controls can block cookies, although disabling them may change how some site functions behave.

What We Do With This Data

  • Routing a search request to the selected partner service
  • Maintaining website availability and performance
  • Finding and resolving errors or security issues
  • Measuring which pages are useful and which need improvement
  • Displaying advertising that may reflect a visitor's interests

No Criminal-Record Data on File

New Jersey Criminal History does not keep, assemble, or sell a database of personal criminal records. The website provides reference material about records maintained by the New Jersey State Police State Bureau of Identification, the New Jersey Department of Corrections, the New Jersey Sex Offender Internet Registry, the New Jersey Judiciary, and agencies across the state's 21 counties. Access to government records may be governed by the New Jersey Open Public Records Act, N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1 et seq., while dissemination of criminal history record information is separately limited by N.J.S.A. 53:1-20.6 and N.J.A.C. 13:59. This private website is not a government record custodian or a consumer reporting agency, and visitor data is not compiled into consumer reports about other people.

Third-Party Search Partners

Outside companies operate the search boxes that appear on the website. A partner's privacy policy, rather than this policy, controls information entered into its tool. Each partner sets its own retention and disclosure rules. Review those terms before sending a query because New Jersey Criminal History cannot control the partner's practices.

Links to Other Websites

Links may lead to New Jersey agencies, Judiciary portals, county offices, legal-aid organizations, or outside search services. Once a visitor follows an external link, the destination's privacy terms govern the visit. Check those terms before providing personal information.

Advertising providers may use their own technology to follow activity across websites and select ads. That tracking occurs through the provider's systems.

Who Might See Your Data

Personal data is not sold. Limited information may be available to:

  • Analytics providers measuring traffic and site performance
  • Search partners processing a query submitted through their tool
  • Advertising networks serving ads on the website
  • Government or law-enforcement bodies acting under a valid legal order

How We Protect Your Data

Reasonable, standard security measures are used to protect collected information. No internet-connected service can guarantee absolute security, so New Jersey Criminal History cannot promise that unauthorized access or a breach will never occur.

Users Under 18

The website is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If information from a minor is identified, a request may be made for its deletion.

Your Data Rights

Rights may differ based on where a visitor lives and which law applies. New Jersey OPRA governs access to records held by covered public agencies; it does not turn New Jersey Criminal History into a public custodian or govern this private site's visitor data. Subject to applicable law, a visitor may:

  • Request access to personal information held about them
  • Ask that inaccurate personal information be corrected
  • Seek deletion of personal information
  • Opt out of certain processing where that choice is legally available

This policy may be revised as practices or legal requirements change. The revised text will appear on this page with a new effective date. Visitors should review it periodically.
